BARBARA (WOODS) WATT, BSc(HEc)'55, was awarded the Victorian Order of Nurses Canadian Award for Excellence in Volunteering for 2005. She is a hospice volunteer in the Halton Branch (Oakville/ Burlington). Barbara was named Volunteer of the Year by the town of Oakville in 2000 for contributing to the improvement of the town's social services and the well-being of its citizens.

EBRAHIM NOROOZI, MSc(Agr)'78, received two major awards in 2005. He was awarded the National Volunteer of the Year Award by the Canadian Board of Registered Safety Professionals in recognition of his contributions as a safety professional toward the organization's mission, which is "Prevention of hazards to people, product, property and the environment." Ebrahim also earned the National Food Industry Award from the Iranian Food Science and Technology Association for many years of collaboration.

Architecture

ERIC BUNGE, BScArch'89, BArch'91, was awarded the Professional Prix de Rome in Architecture in September 2005 by the Canada Council for the Arts. With this award, Eric will study the ways in which different cultures have invented architectural devices to control heat and light in buildings by travelling to four distinct climates in countries including Brazil, Japan, Morocco and Finland.

KATY (FLUCK) FLAMMIA, MArch'91, is president of THEREdesign Architecture and Interior Design in Boston, where her work focuses on corporate, hospitality, academic and residential architectural and interior design projects. For more information, see www.THEREdesign.com.

DAVID RIFKIND, MArch'97, began a two-year teaching appointment in architectural history at the University of Virginia's School of Architecture this fall. He has been teaching history and theory graduate seminars in art, architecture and design at several New York schools, including the Parsons School of Design, the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and Columbia University, where he is completing his doctoral dissertation on the relationships between modern architecture and politics in fascist Italy.

Arts

DEANE DOWNEY, BA'62, retired at the end of December 2004 as Associate Academic Vice-President and Professor of English at Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C. After completing an MA in English at the University of Toronto and a PhD at the University of Alberta, he began his career at Trinity in 1973, when the institution was just a two-year junior college. Deane will continue teaching on a part-time basis.

LARRY M. RASKIN, MA'64, PhD'66, has semi-retired from his clinical practice but continues as president of Psychology Resource Group, which he founded in 1981, after leaving the University of Louisville's School of Medicine as a full professor. Larry heads one of the largest private practices in Kentucky. He was the last student to earn a PhD under the direction of the late McGill professor D.O. HENRY SREBRNIK, BA'66, MA'70, co-edited the book De Facto States: The Quest for Sovereignty (Routledge, 2004), a comprehensive theoretical and empirical examination of ten entities that seek recognition as sovereign states from the international community. Henry is a professor in the Department of Political Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown.

JUDITH (HODGSON) SANFORD, BA'69, has lived in Ashland, Oregon, since 1987. She and her husband Michael have two university-age daughters, Caitlin and Ivaly. Judith has a private practice in craniosacral therapy and has just started acting again after a long break. She says hello to Barb McC and Braddles!

MONICA (KEATON) SCHEEL, BA'72, MSW'74, is continuing her career in the employee assistance field and works in Fort McMurray, Alta., as Team Leader of the Employee and Family Assistance Program for Syncrude Canada Ltd. ERICA STEVENS ABBITT, BA'74, received her PhD in Critical Studies from UCLA's School of Theater, Television and Film in 2003. She is serving as assistant professor at the University of Windsor's School of Dramatic Art. Erica's work has been published in Theatre Journal and Signs: A Journal Of Women In Culture And Society, and she recently presented a paper on Canadian performance artists Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan at the 2005 International Federation of Theatre Research conference in Washington, D.C.

ALLAN LAWRENCE NADLER, BA'76, has been promoted to Full Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at Drew University, and is Director of the Jewish Studies program. Allan spent the spring of 2005 on sabbatical in Montreal teaching a course at McGill in the Jewish Studies department. Allan is working on his forthcoming book, The Heretic as Hero: Spinoza in the Modern Jewish Imagination.

GARY KANOFSKY, BA'78, has been promoted to Director of News Digital Operations and Other Media Production for financial news network CNBC. This position is new at CNBC and Gary will work to improve existing systems while developing efficient practices for editing and developing new tools under the digital system. Gary will also continue to oversee the CNBC Radio group and the CNBC.com website.

RAYMOND THÉBERGE, PhD'84, was appointed Director General of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada. Prior to his appointment at CMEC, Raymond was Assistant Deputy Minister at the Bureau de l'éducation française. He is also a former Dean of Education at St. Boniface College, and has published extensively in the fields of French minority-language education and second-language learning. CMEC is an intergovernmental body composed of the ministers responsible for education from the provinces and territories.

KODWO GHARTEY-TAGOE, BA'85, is Associate General Counsel for Duke Energy Corporation in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he lives with his wife, Phyllis, and three daughters, Effe, Aseda and Gracie.

JEFFREY LENKOV, BA'87, is an equity partner in the Los Angeles firm Manning, Marder. He serves as an adjunct professor of law at Southwestern University School of Law and as an "on-air" legal analyst for a television news station.

JAMES DELOREY, BA'91, married Dr. Angela Ryan in Westport, Conn., in July 2004. ENRIQUE MAYOR-MORA, BA'91, has been named Vice-President of Planning and Analysis at Denny's Inc, America's largest family restaurant chain. He will be responsible for planning and budgeting, operations, finance and marketing analysis functions at the corporate and restaurant levels. Previously, Enrique was Vice-President of Finance at Gap Inc. He is based at Denny's corporate headquarters in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

SEAN ALEXANDER GURD, BA'96, has published Iphegenias at Aulis (Cornell University Press, 2005). The book offers a radical new perspective on the limits and the accomplishments of the modern traditions of textual criticism in classics.

VALERIE VENTUREYRA, BA'96, writes that after graduating from McGill, she moved to France to pursue her studies. She completed her Master's and DEA degrees in Lyon, where she worked on post-traumatic stress disorder. Valerie then moved to Paris to pursue her PhD in Experimental Psychology/ Cognitive Science at École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. She defended her thesis, entitled "In Search of the Lost Language: First Language Attrition in Koreans Adopted in France," and graduated summa cum laude. Valerie also completed a specialization in cognitive behavioural therapy at the University of Paris and is pursuing a postdoctoral fellowship on post-traumatic stress disorder.

STEPHEN D. SCARFF, MA'98, was nominated to the Board of Governors of Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, California. He has also been working on strategies and programming to provide basic medical and support services in Honduras to those with HIV/AIDS. This work is being accomplished through the Episcopal Parish of All Saints, Beverly Hills. Stephen recently worked with a team in the city of San Pedro Sula to construct a daycare facility. CHARLES RHÉAUME, PhD'99, historien au ministère de la Défense nationale à Ottawa, s'est vu octroyer la Médaille biannuelle Jean Finot du meilleur livre humanitaire 2005 de l'Académie des sciences morales et politiques de France pour son livre Sakharov : Science, morale et politique (Presse de l'Université Laval 2004). LARA OSTARIC, MA'00, has joined Saint Michael's College in Vermont as an instructor in philosophy. Her doctoral dissertation at the University of Notre Dame was entitled "Between Insight and Judgement: Kant's Conception of Genius and Its Relation to the Platonic Philosophy in German Idealism." Ostaric has translated Jurgen Stolzenberg's article "Hegel's Critique of the Enlightenment," in the book Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit. In 2005 she presented a paper on Kant at the 10th International Kant Congress in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

JAIME STEIN, BA'00, was named the play-by-play voice of the Toronto Argonauts for their radio broadcasts in 2005. He was teamed with veteran colour commentator Peter Martin, and all the games were broadcast on 640 Toronto. Jaime was also with the Argos for the 2004 season, when he produced all the radio broadcasts and did play-by-play commentary on four road games.

ROBIN ENGLAND, MA'01, married Jamie England in Antigonish, N.S., in 2001, and has a son, Keats Christopher England, born in 2003. After five years as a technical writer, project manager and freelance writer in the oil and gas industry, Robin moved into health care and is working as a project manager/coordinator in Halifax. JASON (ASA) BOXER, MA'04, was awarded first prize in Canada's 2005 CBC national literary awards for his suite of poems entitled The Workshop. His poems have been broadcast on radio in both French and English. The Workshop appeared in the March issue of enRoute magazine. Asa also won McGill's English department's Mona Adilman Prize for poetry in 2004. His new book of poetry will appear in Signal Editions, the poetry imprint for Véhicule Press. Asa also has a chapbook in the works with Montreal Books Press, and his work will be appearing in Signal Editions' new anthology, The New Canon, which will be launched this fall.

JENNIFER PAUL, BA'05, left for a six-month overseas work placement in Botswana, where she will be working with a community organization dedicated to increasing the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS organizations. Jennifer is one of ten recent university graduates from Canada taking part in the Youth In Partnership project at the Coady Inter-national Institute in Antigonish, N.S.

Dentistry

C.G. BRODIE-BROCKWELL, DDS'48, is following up his second book, Migraine, The Causes and Treatment, with his third book, which not only contains additional research information, but also provides several at-home tests that individuals can perform to identify which teeth are acting as migraine triggers. This winter Brodie will be giving seminars titled "Migraine Is Caused by Teeth! Come, Learn and Test Your Mouth" through the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board General Interest Course Program.

MARVIN H. STEINBERG, BSc'70, DDS'72, was awarded fellowship in the Academy of Dentistry International at the Annual Meeting of the Canada Section in August 2005. Marvin is also a member of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists, the American Association of Orthodontists and the Canadian Dental Association. Marvin is president of many dental organizations and continues to practise in Cote St. Luc in Montreal. He lives with his wife, Gail, and has two children, Yarnell and Yaelburton.

Education

ANNE JEANNET, BEd'85, member of the Canadian National Dragon Boat team, competed at the World Dragon Boat Racing Championships in Berlin, Germany, in August 2005. Canada brought home the highest medal count and Anne's crew won both gold and bronze medals. More than 3,000 athletes from over 20 countries raced in the championships.

SUSAN ELLIOTT-JOHNS, MEd'86, PhD'05, graduated with her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from the Department of Integrated Studies in Education in the Faculty of Education at McGill in May 2005.

MIRIAM HAMPSON, BEd'86, and Brad Hampson announce the birth of their third child, Scott Thomas, in Ottawa. Scott is happy and healthy and he joins his older siblings, Jack and Chelsea.

MARK SHAINBLUM, BEd'92, is completing a one-year term as Manager of Communications and Publications for McGill's Admissions, Recruitment and Registrar's Office, replacing a colleague on developmental leave. The ARR Communications Unit is responsible for producing McGill's many student calendars, plus a variety of other publications and online resources.

DONNA GRECE, BEd'93, is married to Edward and living in eastern Ontario. They have two children, Sarah, who is in her first year at McGill, and Scott, who is in high school. Donna says she has enjoyed a rich and diversified career in education.

TRACY ZORDAN, BEd'98, received the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award for Eastern Canada for the 2005 school year. She accepted the honour in October at the National Association of Biology Teachers national convention. Tracy has returned to teaching from a two-year battle with breast cancer. She participated in the "CIBC Run For The Cure" in October and raised over $500 with the support of her students, colleagues, friends and family.

JOHN M. BECK, BEng'63, was appointed to the board of the Ontario Power Authority by the McGuinty government. The Ontario Power Authority operates independently and as a non-profit corporation. John is Chairman of the Board and CEO of Aecon Group Inc., Canada's largest publicly traded construction and infrastructure development company. He has over 40 years of experience both in Canada and abroad, and has led some of the industry's most important and innovative undertakings.

AFTAB MUFTI, MEng'65, PhD'69, received the distinguished Mirko Roš Gold Medal in June 2005 from EMPA Swiss Federal Materials Testing Institute in Dubendorf, Switzerland. Aftab is president of the ISIS Canada Research Network and professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba. He is credited with coining the term "Civionics" to define the need to bring together the brightest minds in the fields of electrical engineering, electronics and photonics to expand the envelope of civil engineering in the future design of civil infrastructure.

GRAHAM MCFARLANE, BEng'69, is moving to Almaty, Kazakhstan, where he will head the management consulting practice as a partner with Deloitte & Touche in the Central Asia region.

DR. YERVANT ZORIAN, PhD'88, was named the 2005 IEEE Circuits and Systems Industrial Pioneer award recipient in recognition of his enormous contributions to design-for-test and embedded repair technology for complex System-on-Chip design. He is Vice-President and Chief Scientist at Virage Logic Corporation, a technology and market leader in providing advanced embedded memory intellectual property for the design of complex integrated circuits.

JIM PASCUAL, BEng'89, MBA'98, lives in Calgary with his wife, SANDY DAVISON, BSW'94, and their two daughters, Jasmine and Chelsea-Brooke. Jim is working at Talisman Energy Inc. as a business analyst in IT, and Sandy is working at the South-West Community Resource Centre as a Community Resource Worker. ANDREW HARRISON, BEng'99, has joined Celtic House Venture Partners, an early-stage technology venture capital firm, as an associate. Prior to Celtic House, he served as associate at Primaxis Technology Ventures. During the past five years, Andrew has worked with a number of early-stage companies, including Chantry Networks, a start-up company that was acquired by Siemens Communications in 2004. Andrew holds a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University. His research, combining computer-chip fabrication techniques with tissue engineering, led to a patent application and a California-based start-up.

Health Sciences

ELIZABETH LANGILLE, BPhysTher'69, was honoured with a Life Membership Award from the Canadian Physiotherapy Association, one of only three people across Canada so honoured in 2005. After graduating from McGill, Beth worked at the Colchester East Hants Regional Hospital, where she completed her career as the manager of Rehabilitation Services in 2004.

COLIN MCMILLAN, MDCM'72, was elected to the position of President-elect of the Canadian Medical Association for the coming year at the association's 138th Annual General Meeting.

JANET ALLEN, BN'73, celebrated her marriage to her new husband, Cam, in July 2005. Since the last reunion in 2002, her career as a Nursing Instructor at Mohawk College/McMaster University ended prematurely due to heart complications. She now spends her time travelling, swimming, gardening and volunteering for the Eating Disorder Services of Brant, which provides education, counselling and support to those suffering from anorexia and bulimia.

GEORGE KUNOS, PhD'73, was the recipient of the 2005 Mechoulam Award of the International Cannabinoid Research Society at its annual meeting for outstanding contributions to cannabinoid research. The award is named for Professor Raphael Mechoulam, an Israeli scientist renowned for his discovery of endogenous cannabinoids, which revolutionized this field. George currently works as Scientific Director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md.

PETER WINN, BSc'74, MDCM'78, was promoted to Professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. He is Board certified in Family Practice in both Canada and the United States, as well as in Geriatrics, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Peter is active at the national level with the American Medical Directors Association, an organization dedicated to education, advocacy and professional development in the pursuit of excellence in patient care. His son Charles is finishing a degree in computer science at the University of Oklahoma, and his son Patrick has entered first year at Syracuse University.

SANTA JEREMY ONO, PhD'91, has been appointed Chief Scientific Officer of iCo Therapeutics Inc., an emerging Vancouver-based biotechnology company focused on developing pre-existing drugs for a range of new conditions affecting isolated biological environments. Prior to this appointment, Santa served as GlaxoSmithKline Professor of Biomedical Sciences, University College, University of London, and Chair of Immunol-ogy, UCL-Institute of Ophthalmology, Moorefields Eye Hospital, the world's first and largest eye research and treatment centre.

CECILY CHEANG LENG TEH, BSc(N)'94, is working at Mahkota Medical Centre, Melaka, Malaysia. After being a critical care head nurse for seven years, Cecily is now embarking on a new career path in health care quality assurance. She is married to J.C. Lee and they have two lovely daughters, Manjushri and Maitreya.

DEBBIE ROSENBAUM, MDCM'99, and GIL KIMEL, BSc'96, say they are having lots of fun with their little son, Max. Debbie is practising nephrology and general internal medicine while Gil is in the internal medicine residency program at UBC. They would be delighted to hear from friends at gkimel@telus.net.

THUY PHUONG, MDCM'05, plans to complete a residency in family medicine, followed by a Master's degree in epidemiology. Thuy has performed over 800 hours of community service in long-term care and geriatric wards at Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont and the Montreal Chinese Hospital.

YOINE J. GOLDSTEIN, BA'55, BCL'58, was summoned to the Canadian Senate in August 2005 by Prime Minister Paul Martin and Governor General Michaëlle Jean.

L. YVES FORTIER, BCL'58, LLD'05, has been recognized as the top arbitrator in the world by The American Lawyer magazine. This distinction comes during Yves's current work as Chair at Ogilvy Renault, a title which he has held since 1992. The ranking was the result of surveys conducted globally across a wide range of law firms from January 2003 to April 2005. This past summer, Yves also received an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from McGill's Faculty of Law.

HOWARD STRAUSS, BA'68, BCL'72, LLB'73, is celebrating 30 years in the foreign service. He is the new Canadian High Commissioner for Trinidad and Tobago. Howard can count Canada's missions in Ghana, Cuba, New York and Lagos, Nigeria, as his previous diplomatic assignments. Aside from working in the department's legal bureau, Howard has served as co-ordinator of the Sudan Task Force and Deputy Agent of the Canada/France Maritime Boundary Arbitration Team.

ELIZABETH L. THOMSON, LLB'74, BCL'75, celebrated the 25th anniversary of her company's operations in Hong Kong. Elizabeth founded ICS Trust in 1980, and from its modest beginnings around her dining room table, the company has grown into a thriving business with 40 staff handling the affairs of several hundred clients worldwide. Services range from corporate structuring and private wealth management to the creation of customized commercial and trade solutions for entrepreneurs and companies doing business in China.

RICHARD DALBELLO, LLM'84, has been named Vice President of Government Relations for Intelsat General Corporation (IGC), a leader in providing satellite networking services to commercial, government and military customers. Richard will be responsible for informing and educating policymakers in government-related organizations.

Library and Information Studies

ISABELLE CRÉPEAU, MLIS'98, was invited by Dr. Michèle Daviau, of the Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University, to join her team for the ninth season of archaeological excavations at Khirbat Al-Mudayna in Wadi Ath-Thamad, Jordan. As Object Registrar, Isabelle was in charge of registering all objects found and supervising the drawing and photographing of the objects. She also recorded all special architectural elements of the site, which dates from the Iron Age. Isabelle works as Assistant Acquisition Librarian at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal.

GREGG LAPOINTE, DPA'83, was appointed to the Board of Directors of Questcor Pharmaceuticals, Inc, a company that develops and commercializes novel therapeutics for the treatment of neurological disorders. Gregg is Chief Operating Officer of Sigma-Tau Pharmaceuticals, Inc., in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He also serves on the board of EP Global Communications, Inc., and is a member of the corporate council for the National Organization for Rare Diseases, the Child Neurology Foundation and Kidney Care Partners.

CHRISTIANE BERGEVIN, BCom'84, was appointed to the Business Development Bank Board of Directors by David L. Emerson, former Minister of Industry. Since 1997, she has been President of SNC-Lavalin Capital Inc., which has grown into one of the largest non-bank sources of financial expertise in Canada under her leadership. The BDC, owned by the Government of Canada, plays a leadership role in delivering financial, investment and consulting services to Canadian small businesses, with a particular focus on the technology and export sectors.

ROBERT SOROKA, BCom'84, is a playwright as well as having taught in the Desautels Faculty of Management since 1997. His latest production, Thesis of Life, was performed at the McGill Players' Theatre.

SHAUN MACDONALD, MBA'86, was appointed Vice President of Corporate Development at Redknee Inc., a leading global provider of communication software to wireless telecommunication network operators. He will be responsible for Redknee's mergers and acquisitions, and worldwide corporate alliance activities. Prior to Redknee, Shaun spent seven years at Cisco Systems and three years at Openwave Systems, leading a broad range of international acquisition, investment, licensing and spin-off transactions.

HOWARD E. JOHNSON, DPA'89, is President of Veracap Corporate Finance Limited in Toronto. He earned an MBA from McMaster University and was awarded a Fellowship in the Society of Management Accountants of Canada. Howard also holds the designations of Chartered Accountant, Chartered Business Valuator, Certified Public Accountant, Chartered Financial Analyst and Accredited Senior Appraiser. His latest book is entitled Selling Your Private Company: the Value Enhancement Framework™ for Business Owners, published by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants. Howard is a renowned speaker on the subjects of business valuation, acquisitions, divestitures and shareholder value enhancement.

ZOYA SHCHUPAK, DPA'91, MBA'95, was appointed Vice President, Finance, and Chief Financial Officer of Engenuity Technologies in August 2005. Engenuity provides simulation software for the aerospace, defence and automotive industries. Zoya was previously an investment manager with Desjardins Venture Capital.

ALAIN M. BELLEMARE, MBA'93, was appointed to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) for a three-year term. He is currently president of Pratt & Whitney Canada, and has worked with the organization since 1996 as Vice-President of Manufacturing and Vice-President of Operations. He is also a member of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. NSERC is a federal agency whose role is to make investments in people, discovery and innovation to benefit all Canadians. The agency supports more than 20,000 university students and postdoctoral fellows in their advanced studies.

TODD ROBERTS, BCom'93, after four years in Baltimore, returned to Ottawa with his wife, Amanda, and daughter, Olivia. Todd is Director of Operations for CAPCORP Financial, a financial planning firm catering to business owners. They recently spent a weekend at Mont-Tremblant in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the McGill chapter of Phi Kappa Pi. They say they are renovating an older house in the city and enjoying being back home.

ISABELLE MÉNARD, BCom'96, and her husband, Eric Ladouceur, welcomed the birth of their first child, Catherine Dominique, in February 2005. Eric and Isabelle were married in June 2003. Isabelle is completing her MBA at Queen's University and will shortly return to her position as Assistant Vice-President of Commercial Financial Services, at HSBC in Montreal.

SHARENE LONIA SHARIFUDIN, BCom'98, returned to Malaysia in 1998. She and her husband, Syahril Azar Yunus (Engineering), met at McGill 11 years ago. They say their only wish is to take their son to Montreal and show him the places where his parents' love blossomed.

ERIC LEFEBVRE, BCom'00, and SOLANGE GARCEAU, BCom'95, DPA'97, are very proud to announce the birth of their second child, Thomas Jacques, who was born in May 2005. Big sister Myriam, now age 2, is thrilled about the arrival of her little brother.

MICHAEL GRIBE, MBA'04, and LOREA GARCIA LARESGOITI, MBA'04, married in Montreal in May 2005. They arrived from France and Mexico respectively, and met while studying for the MBA at McGill. They are now living in Toronto, where Michael works as a management consultant for Gap International and Lorea as an integration specialist for GE Money.

Music

PIERRE PERRON, BMus'61, wrote and produced radio music education programs with his wife Margaret Tse for 12 years in English and French for CBC and Radio-Canada. Then they moved to Halifax in 1981, where Pierre took up the position of Head of Music Education at Dalhousie University, and Margaret taught music in French Immersion classes. Pierre is retired but still very active as a church organist and choir director. He was invited to bring a Canadian choir to join select American choirs singing Handel's Messiah in Carnegie Hall in April.

JONATHAN G. BAYLEY, BMus'75, published an article titled "The Fundamentals of Successful Flute Playing" in Canadian Winds/Vents canadiens: The Journal of the Canadian Band Association. The journal promotes the musical, educational and cultural values of band music in Canada. Jonathan is an associate professor of music education at the University of Windsor in the Faculty of Education.

COLIN DOROSCHUK, BMus'87, performed his new, full-length ballet entitled Alice, based on the story of Alice in Wonderland, in December at the Ballet Victoria, where for the past two years he has been Resident Composer. During that time, Colin presented two original works (the full-length ballet Peter Pan and the opera-ballet Medea Metamorphoses), while earning his MA in music and drama from the University of Victoria.

KEITH HARTSHORN-WALTON, BMus'99, has accepted the tuba position with the Foothills Brass quintet in Calgary, Alta. Keith had been looking forward to touring with the Foothills Brass during their 25th anniversary tour which started in November 2005. B. SEYMOUR RABINOVITCH, BSc'39, PhD'42, is keeping busy with the publication of his new book, Contemporary Silver: Part II, which annotates a collection of newly commissioned silver that is a study of present-day practice by artist craftsmen. The collection has now entered the holdings of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, where an exhibition opened in October 2005.

LOU SIMINOVITCH, BSc'41, PhD'44, DSc'90, was awarded the Canadian Medical Association 2005 CMA Medal of Honour. Lou is the 22nd recipient of this prestigious award, the highest bestowed upon a person who is not a member of the medical profession. The Medal of Honour recognizes personal contributions to advanced medical research, medical education, health care organization and overall service in raising the standards of health care delivery.

VICTOR F. SCOTT, BSc'59, has been appointed Senior Vice-President for Health Sciences at Howard University in Washington, D.C., as of June 2005. His responsibilities include overall management of the clinical enterprise and the health sciences segments of the academic enterprise, including the Howard University Hospital, the College of Medicine, the College of Dentistry, the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, the Health Sciences Library and the Student Health Centre. Victor has served in this role on an interim basis since April 2003.

RONALD PEARLMAN, BSc'61, has been appointed Interim Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies at York University. Ronald previously served as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies from 1999 to 2004.

BERTHA KALIFON MADRAS, BSc'63, PhD'67, DipEd'69, was nominated to be Deputy Director for Demand Reduction at the Office of National Drug Control Policy by U.S. President George Bush. She is currently a Professor of Psychobiology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. Bertha also chairs the Division of Neurochemistry at the New England Primate Research Center.

AFZAL KHAN, BSc'64, works at Bell Canada looking after the large corporate accounts in sales in the greater Toronto area.

BOB WILLARD, BSc'64, is the author of The Sustainability Advantage: Seven Business Case Benefits of a Triple Bottom Line (New Society Publishers, 2002) and The Next Sustainability Wave: Building Boardroom Buy-in (New Society Publishers, 2005). Bob is a leading expert on the business value of corporate sustainability strategies. During his 34-year IBM career, he held leadership positions in marketing, technical support, education and human resources. He recently served on the boards of Eco-Energy Durham and the Ontario Sustainable Energy Association. Bob is the delighted owner of one of the first Honda Civic hybrid-electric cars sold in Canada.

PETER KEVAN, BSc'65, recently co-edited a book called Practical Pollination Biology with colleagues from the University of Guelph. Peter continues to be active in pollination, agricultural and conservation ecology and is one of three Canadians on the main steering committee for the North American Pollination Project Campaign.

STAN SHAPSON, BSc'66, was named Vice President of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) in August 2005. SSHRC is an independent federal government agency that funds university-based research and graduate training through national peer-review competitions.

RON CLAVIER, BSc'69, has pursued careers in brain research, psychology and oil painting, and is now back in Montreal, advising the Montreal Alouettes on their wonderful teen mentorship program "Adopt-An-Alouette." STAN ARONOFF, BSc'74, earned a Master's of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary and a PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. His book, Remote Sensing for GIS Managers, has been published by ESRI Press. His previous books were Geographic Information Systems: A Management Perspective and Total Workplace Performance: Rethinking the Office Environment, which won the 1996 Distinguished Authors Award from the International Facility Management Institute in Houston, Texas. Stan lives in Ottawa, where he is a writer and consultant.

PETER MACKEAN, BSc'77, was honoured with the Preceptor of the Year Award and the Prince Edward Island 2005 Family Physician of the Year Award in recognition of outstanding training of medical students and residents and exemplary family medicine practice. He has been a teaching physician since 1986, after earning his medical degree from Dalhousie.

GAIL KRANTZBERG, BSc'79, has been appointed Director of the new Centre for Engineering and Public Policy established at McMaster University in partnership with Dofasco. Gail will play an integral part in launching the Master's Program in Engineering and Public Policy, the first degree of its kind in Canada. The program provides graduate students with an advanced understanding of the public policy process and its relationship to technological, social and ecological systems. Previously, Gail was director of the Great Lakes Regional Office of the International Joint Commission for four years.

WARREN SUKERNEK, BSc'82, was named Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Reservations at Cruise West, a second generation, family-owned business and the largest American-owned cruise line. Formerly, Warren was President of Oriac Design, where, under his leadership, Oriac garnered several awards, including the Silver Medal from the Direct Marketing Association as "Best New Cataloguer" in 2000. Warren is also an accomplished industry speaker.

DOROTHY TEDDI ANN GALLIGAN, BSc'83, and her husband, David Alan Diggs, announce with great joy the birth of their second daughter, Josephine Lucia Diggs-Galligan, in July 2005 in Washington, D.C. They say her big sister, Sophia Emmanuelle, is enjoying her new status immensely.

Dan honed his pharmaceutical and intellectual property experience with Toronto-based law firms Bereskin & Parr, and Gowling, Lafleur & Henderson.

Enlisting the help of female staff members from the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research, Sabrina and Randy created a tasteful and informative calendar to help raise awareness about breast cancer.

RAYMOND T. COWARD, MSW'86, has been appointed Provost and Executive Vice President at Utah State University. Both titles provide academic vision and leadership to advance and support excellence in teaching, research and engagement. Before arriving at Utah State, Raymond was the Raymond E. and Erin Stuart Schultz Professor and dean of Penn State's College of Health and Human Development. His seventh edited volume, titled Rural Women's Health: Mental, Behavioral and Physical Issues, was released in October 2005 by Springer Publishing.
