The 1925 convocation marked the dedication of the Roddick Gates, donated to the University in honour of Sir Thomas Roddick by his widow. Roddick, MDCM1868, believed in the germ theory of medicine and introduced Lister's aseptic practices into Montreal hospitals. He was the first surgeon in chief at the Royal Victoria Hospital, went on to become Dean of Medicine at McGill, and as a member of the House of Commons, introduced a bill to provide common qualifications for the practice of medicine in Canada. |

University policy dictated that undergraduate female students from out of town had to live in residence at Royal Victoria College. Funded by Lord Strathcona and opened in 1899, RVC provided very comfortable accommodation. Among the amenities were a well-equipped gymnasium and an outdoor skating rink. |
